Asbestos in soil

TOP

In the quarter April to June 2016 we scheduled 4900 Asbestos in soil tests, a 40% increase on the same period in 2015. We constantly monitor our capacity for all key tests and have placed orders for additional microscopes and asbestos cabinets as a result of the increased demand for our Asbestos in soil services.

Don’t forget - we aim to report all positive Asbestos in soil results at latest on Day 3 of turnaround (see our June 2016 Envirolab Update).

Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) testing - sample size

TOP

All WAC suites require a leachability analysis for metals, anions, dissolved solids, phenol and organic carbon. The leaching process needs to follow BSEN 12457, whether the 2 stage or single stage leaching is being done, and this requires 175g of 'dry weight equivalent' as received sample to be used. So for a sample with 20% moisture approximately 220g of as received sample needs to be used. Higher moisture content samples will need more as received sample.

All WAC suites also require testing of the sample itself for some or all of pH, ANC, LOI, TOC, PAH, Mineral Oil, PCB and BTEX. The lab will need at least the same amount of sample as used for the leachability to perform this solid testing, especially when taking into account the need to have a moisture result to calculate how much as received sample is needed for leachability.

Its not uncommon for clients to need leachability information about other contaminants (PAH, TPH etc) and this only increases the amount of as received sample needed for leaching.

Envirolab ask for 1 x 825ml plastic tub, 1 x 258ml glass jar and 1 x 60ml glass jar for WAC analysis. That way we can guarantee to be following BSEN 12457 and to have enough sample for all of the other analysis you need.
