CAPACITY IMPROVEMENTS

Phenols

TOP

We will be adding to our HPLC capacity with the introduction of a new instrument in June. Phenols (total and speciated) are some of our most commonly scheduled analyses and we expect that trend to continue.

It has always been our policy to track instrument utilisation to ensure service to clients is maintained and we have KPI's that monitor capacity vs workload.

This is a significant investment and our new instrument and increased capacity will give us even more reliability with our already impressive turnaround times.

DID YOU KNOW

Yes, you really do need to filter your water sample for dissolved metals analysis into a preserved bottle immediately!

TOP

Clients have been querying the need to filter on site, having been advised by others that filtering and preserving after receipt at the lab is enough.

We performed a trial with 13 samples, from different clients and different sites, that had been filtered on site into bottles containing nitric acid and the same, unfiltered, samples that were filtered and preserved by us 2 days after sampling.

The charts below show the % recovered, for 3 metals (Fe, Zn & As), from samples filtered and preserved 2 day after sampling compared to samples filtered and preserved immediately on site.

PRIZE DRAW

As an example, we recovered only 66% of the Fe from Sample 1 compared the filtered and preserved on site sample. Other recoveries are much lower.

So, if you don’t filter and preserve on site, you are almost guaranteed to have lower concentrations in solution within a very short time. Increased concentrations are also possible, due to metals being leached from solids left in the sample.

We have data from days 3 to 7 but you really don’t want to see that!
