Single stage (L:S 10:1) leachate for Waste Acceptance Criteria

TOP

What is it?

A single stage leaching at a liquid to solid (L:S) ratio of 10:1. New EA guidance states that a single 10:1 leaching is suitable for most wastes destined for disposal in landfill (see Technical Briefing below).

What do we report?

Comparison of data with limit criteria to aid classification of waste as suitable for disposal in either Inert, Stable non-reactive hazardous waste or Hazardous waste landfills.

What turnaround is available?

A 4 day turnaround can be requested for L:S 10:1 WAC leaching, including analysis of the solid waste.

New EA guidance "Waste Sampling and Testing for Disposal to Landfill"

TOP

A change to the testing requirements necessary to classify waste for disposal to landfill has been made. New guidance states "a single step leaching test at a liquid to solid (L:S) ratio of 10:1 l/kg is adequate for establishing and monitoring the cumulative mass leached and general leaching behaviour, and specifies the use of a EN 12457-2002 at L/S 10 l/kg for most wastes destined for disposal in landfill sites. Although alternative leaching protocols may need to be considered when highly leachable constituents are present."

Asbestos in soil

TOP

We have increased the number of staff trained to P401 and now have capacity to process in excess of 130 samples per day for asbestos in soil. Accelerated turnaround contamination analysis is still available for samples scheduled for asbestos in soil.

We have new training relating to Deviating Samples that can be delivered at your office and takes about an hour. Audience size is up to you; we recommend between four and ten attendees.

You will gain an understanding of the container requirements that will ensure your analytical data is robust enough to satisfy your regulator.

Our Life of a Sample presentation is designed to be a brief introduction to the workings of an Analytical Laboratory. It continues to be popular with clients from a wide range of business sectors. No knowledge of chemistry is needed. This is held at our Hyde laboratory and lasts about 4 hours, with lunch included.

The session includes:

  • A walk through of some key processes from sample reception to sample analysis.
  • Time in the lab witnessing analysis.
  • An overview of the critical issues within the client's control potentially affecting the robustness of your results.

It is especially useful for clients wanting a better understanding of what goes on in the lab, and allows us the opportunity to share some of the background activity so important to the delivery of accurate and reliable results on time, every time.

Some recent client feedback: "Seeing the high level of quality control and calibration required for accurate testing and accreditation was something which I was not previously aware of.", "...we all came away feeling that we have a good idea of how a sample of potentially contaminated soil goes from being treated or excavated on site to being assessed for chemical properties", "I thought the delivery was excellent and made it possible for us to ask questions and learn more as a result.".
